Dale Vander Linden’s whittling pencils

Dale Vander Linden uses pencils and rolling pins when carving his Santa Claus. He is 81 years old and spends days carving Santa Claus using pencils and other materials. While it would be tempting to use a carver’s kit to carve Santa Claus's face, he prefers to use the rolling pin.

Wood carving techniques

There are many wood carving methods that you can choose from to make your pencils. One of the easiest techniques is to use natural oils to finish the wood carvings. These oils protect the wood form from dirt and moisture. Gloss varnish is not recommended as it can create a shiny, distorted surface which will confuse the observer. Wax, which gives pencils soft, lustrous sheen, is another technique. This is best for indoor carvings.

Consider the type and purpose of your carving. For detailed carving, select a wood with a fine grain and little figure. Strong figures can make it difficult to see fine detail. After you have selected the wood, it is time to choose the appropriate tools. Safety goggles and Kevlar safety gloves will be required. These will protect your hands from wood chips and ensure that you're not scratching the wood.

sanding the edges on whittling pencils

applying water based polyurethane

Wood carving has become a very popular method of decorating. This method typically involves carving a wooden plaque or tablet. These pencils can be sanded to improve the appearance and feel of the final product. These pencils may prove to be extremely useful no matter the purpose. The edges of the pencils must be sanded first to create a smooth surface.

Begin by creating divots within the graphite core. You can now use a number-2 pencil to make the marks once you've completed that. Make sure to use sandpaper that is lighter than the mark before you stop. Hot-melt glue can be used to seal the pencil tip.

How To

How to stain wood

Staining wood can be described as a process where chemicals are applied to the wood surface. This causes the wood to take on a new color. This chemical reaction causes wood to turn from whiteish to brownish. While oak is the most widely used type of wood for staining purposes, other types of wood are also available.

There are many options for applying stains to wood surfaces. Mixing the stain in a solvent such as turpentine and spraying it onto the wood is one method. Another method involves applying a solution of water to the wood. Stains can also be mixed into paints and varnishes, becoming part of the finish coating.

The first step in staining wood is preparing the surface. The wood must be thoroughly cleaned to remove all grease and dirt. Sanding the wood smooths out rough spots and scratches. Next, you need to decide which stain you want. Penetrating stains are different from non-penetrating. Penetrating stains penetrate deeper into the wood than non-penetrating ones, making them ideal for dark colors such as mahogany. Non-penetrating oils work best when used with light colors, like maple.

After choosing the type and application method you prefer, gather your tools. The best tool for applying stains is a paintbrush. It allows you to evenly distribute the liquid over the surface. You should also have some handy rags to wipe up excess stains after you finish painting. If you are planning to mix your stain, ensure you have enough containers for each component.

After you have prepared the materials, you can clean the area where you want to stain the wood. To remove dirt and dust, use warm water and soap. Use a dampened sponge and warm water to clean the entire piece. If you intend to stain darker wood, make sure you get rid of any debris.

Next, spray the stain. The stain can be applied by spraying or brushing the stain onto one end of the furniture. Slowly and carefully move along the grain of wood, slowly but steadily, until you reach the other end. Be careful not to let the stain drip off the wood's edge. Before you proceed with the next steps, let the stain dry completely.

Apply a clear polyurethane sealant to protect the painted surface. Apply three coats of polyurethane sealer. Allow the third coat to dry overnight, before sanding.
