FAQ

How can I organize my shop?

To keep your workshop tidy and organized, you should first create a place for tools storage. Your tools will stay sharp and ready to go when they are free from dust and debris. Hang tools and accessories using pegboard hooks.

How long does it take for furniture to be finished?

It depends on which wood you choose, how complicated your design is and what amount of finishing you apply. For example, hardwoods require more maintenance than softwoods. Hardwoods tend to be more expensive that softwoods. They last longer and are more resistant to moisture. The average time it takes to finish furniture is one week to three weeks.

Can I make a living doing this?

Yes! In fact, many woodworkers already do. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual woodworker wage was $34,000 in May 2012. This is much higher than the national median of $31,000 per annum.

How To

How to drive a nail through wood

It is essential to pick the right size and style of hammer before you can drive a nail in wood. The most popular types of hammers include claw hammers as well as mallets and ball peenhammers. Each type of hammer has its pros and cons. A claw hammer, for example, is the best choice if you need to hit nails hard. However, it's not easy to know exactly where the impact will land. A sledgehammer is useful for striking large areas at once but too heavy to be effective for smaller tasks.

After you've chosen the right tool, hold your hand flat to the handle so it rests comfortably in one of your palms. Grab the handle tightly, but do not squeeze too hard. Hold the hammer straight up, keeping your wrist relaxed. Swing the hammer back towards the ground, with your aim at the middle of the nail. You should feel the impact from the hammer striking a nail. Practice swinging your hammer on a block of wooden until you feel comfortable.

The hammer should be held close to your body when you are ready to begin driving the nail. You will need to position the nail so it is parallel to the wood. Keep your eyes on the tip. Swing the hammer forward, then follow through with the motion of the hammerhead. You can repeat this several times, increasing your swing speed. When you are confident with the technique, add power to your swings. Try holding the hammer above your shoulder and bring it down forcefully. This will allow you to exert more energy.

Once you have successfully drilled the first hole in the nail, remove the hammer. You can then remove the rest of the nails using a prybar or a screwdriver. Keep the nail heads parallel to the board's surfaces in order to avoid splitting wood.
